First Aid Course for Children & Babies
Type: Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (QCF)
A qualification developed to deliver the skills recommended by Ofsted, Sure Start and The National Childminders Association (NCMA) to those responsible for taking First Aid Action where a child or baby is involved.
This course has been approved by Ofqual as complying with the requirements of the HSE.

To equip candidates with the skills and knowledge to recognise various childhood medical conditions and carry out basic First Aid until qualified medical assistance arrives at the scene.
Candidates are required to undertake a minimum of 12 hours of hands on training which is delivered in a variety of formats.
Who should do the course
Anyone who works in child care or who wishes to expand on the skills they have already attained.
Ongoing assessment throughout the course to include:
Understanding of the Law relating to First Aid at Work.
Demonstration of basic casualty care.
Demonstration of basic life support skills (child and infant).
Demonstration of the ability to control bleeding
Understanding- recognition and treatment of common injuries, medical conditions and illnesses.
Theory to include:
Understanding the role of the Paediatric First Aider
Communication with children
Dangers for different age groups in a variety of environments
Planning for an emergency, accident prevention and safety
Recognition and treatment of miscellaneous injuries and medical conditions
Recognition and treatment of Burns and Scalds
Common childhood illnesses and infectious diseases
Practical to include:
Management of an unconscious child
Basic Life Support - Child and infant resuscitation (CPR)
Management of an airway obstruction
Control of Bleeding - including basic bandaging techniques
As a professionally approved and accredited qualification, requiring the support of various risk assessment, safe systems of work documents and insurance this qualification is officially for the 'workplace' and therefore candidates will need to be of working age. Where those of 'pre-workforce age' require a suitable qualification then a community type qualification would be more appropriate.
Must be able to take part in practical activity involving kneeling and laying down
Candidates must be at least 16 years of age at the commencement of the course
All Active Luton courses are delivered and assessed in English. Tutors must be convinced that you have sufficient fluency in written and spoken English to cope with your course from the start.

The HSE recommend that All First Aiders attend annual refresher training to help reduce the impact of 'first aid skills fade'
