Active Luton team up with Macmillan to offer exercise programme
Luton residents who have had or are currently receiving treatment for cancer can take advantage of a new exercise programme led by Active Luton.
The Cancer and Physical Activity Pilot will be running for a year and offer a variety of exercise activities.
Funded by Macmillan Cancer Support, the pilot will be run predominantly from the new Lewsey Sports Park, with a variety of wet and dry side activities on offer.
Staff at the centre will be working closely with Macmillan nurses and experts from Luton and Dunstable hospital to deliver specific exercise programmes which will cater to each individual’s needs.
Helen Barnett, Active Luton Chief Executive, said: “Studies from the American College of Sport Medicine have shown that physical activity during of after cancer treatment is associated with improved physical and mental wellbeing.”
“Through our partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, we are now able to offer a great service which will really be able to suit each person’s needs. I’d really encourage anyone who is undergoing or has had treatment for cancer to get in touch and find out what we can do for them.”

More information
The Cancer and Physical Activity Pilot is a partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support, Active Luton and Luton and Dunstable Hospital NHS Foundation Trust/Cambridge Community Services which encourages people living with cancer to be active during and after treatment.
The pilot is a one year project funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and delivered by Active Luton. It is based on evidence* that demonstrates that physical activity during and after cancer treatment is associated with improved physical and emotional wellbeing, as well as reducing the risk of other associated health conditions and of some cancers recurring.
Cancer nurse specialists based at Luton and Dunstable Hospital NHS Foundation Trust/Cambridge Community Services will discuss the benefits of being active with their patients and signpost them on to Active Luton. Active Luton will provide assessment, motivational interviewing and a personalised activity programme. A variety of schemes, such as specialist classes, yoga, walking and other exercises will be offered.
