Field of dreams

Rugby at Saracens

Field of Dreams is a Luton Borough Council project managed by Active Luton, which is designed to combine powerful personal development & life skills coaching with a demanding regime of rugby and fitness training. The overall goal is to take young people who are underachieving and to bring about a positive change in their life - getting back into education, training or employment.

The project is aimed at 15 - 19 year old young males in year 1 (year 2 will include boys and girls), who are referred onto the project by Luton youth agencies, schools and voluntary organisations.

Field of Dreams is a multi agency project that, as well as Active Luton and Luton Borough Council, involves :

  • Saracens RFC - Saracens RFC will be taking the young people through an intensive training schedule. This will result in getting them physically fitter and aware of nutrition.
  • Youth at Risk - Youth at Risk are an organisation that have been delivering transformational programmes for young people and those who support them for 16 years.
  • Luton RFC - One of our local rugby clubs, Luton RFC are supporting Saracens in the delivery of the rugby elements of the project.

The programme teaches the young people how to take the skills learned through rugby (teamwork, setting and achieving goals etc) and then to apply them to other areas of their life. TO support this each young person on the project will recieve one to one life coaching from a dedicated volunteer 'Life Coach'. This will be aimed at addressing individual issues and setting goals to promote improvement.

The project, funded in part by the Big Lottery fund, will comprise of 2 consecutive 12 month projects. Year 1 started back in October 2008 and is now moving towards its conclusion and those involved in the project have recently spent a day at Saracens RFC, playing a game during the half time period at their match with Leicester Tigers.
