The Magic of Books

Our Book Days are a brilliant way of taking children on a journey into the world of reading and creative thinking... and so much more.

Choosing to explore a book can engage children across a range of topics in innovative and exciting ways. Whether it’s creating a hedgehog shelter using natural materials, or following a bear hunt trail exploring the habitat, or reading a compass and learning teamwork skills or learning natural navigation techniques and orienteering – there is a wealth of experiences just waiting to be explored.

Children from Year 2 Russell Lower School in Ampthill are reading Mark the Mountain Guide. They spent a day at Dell Farm with activities themed around the book.

Mark the Mountain Guide by Mark Seaton

Key Stage 1

Come and learn some of Mark’s mountain skills for yourself

  • Know what to pack in your rucksack to survive in an extreme environment
  • Use your teamwork skills to negotiate obstacles on the team challenge course
  • Learn how to use a map and compass to read the landscape
  • Conquer a mountain with your friends

The Very Helpful Hedgehog by Rosie Wellesley

Key Stage 1

Hear the story in the company of some of the farm animals and our donkey who feature in the book.

  • Use clay and natural materials to make a clay hedgehog
  • Learn more about the lives of these fascinating creatures
  • Learn how to use a map and compass to read the landscape
  • Construct a shelter for your hedgehog in the orchard using natural materials

We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen

Key Stage 1

Following the story the children will go on their very own bear hunt exploring the natural landscape around Dell Farm

Along the way they will:

  • take part in different sensory activities
  • hunt for colours and textures
  • listen for different sounds in the outdoors

This will link in with a caving session in the afternoon.

Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Marpurgo

Key Stage 2

Experience what life was like for Michael, washed ashore on a desert island

Focusing on survival skills the children will:

  • learn to tie some handy knots to construct a shelter
  • understand the fire triangle and have a go at lighting and maintaining a fire

Learn natural navigation techniques and put their knowledge to the test in an orienteering competition.
